when i take screen captures the files have extensions visible. you have to go into the finder prefs>advanced and check off 'show all extensions'.

The second is to access some onscreen way to capture sections with pixel perfect accuracy. I suppose that one way to do so is to have an X, Y, W and H value displayed onscreen during capture. The values displayed at mouse pointer are helpful - perhaps a more accurate way is to incorporate numerical parameters as well?

when you hit Cmd Shift4 the X & Y values are displayed. if you want to capture something more accurate like a window then hit the space bar after you hit Cmd Shift4 and then click on the window you want captured.
